Have more fun with 3BT
Riders like Klaudia Medlova demand cutting edge gear to help them push the boundaries of women’s snowboarding. At Bataleon, we’ve worked with Klaudia and the other girls on the team to produce the best range of female-specific snowboards anywhere on the market.
Whether you’re into park, powder or just cruising the piste, we’ve got you covered. Uniting all our women’s snowboards is a focus on progression, which is made super easy with Triple Base Technology (3BT). Because whatever level of rider you are, snowboarding is way more fun when you’re getting better.
Which is the best women’s snowboard for me?
The first thing any snowboarder needs to establish when choosing their next board is their ability level and preferred terrain. We’ve put together a whole article on how to choose a snowboard here, but the basic concepts are:
Flex
- Softer boards are better for beginners or freestyle riding
- Stiffer boards are better for advanced riders and/or aggressive turns
Length
- Longer boards are faster but less easy to turn
- Shorter boards are slower but more nimble
- Always check the size chart to help you choose accurately
Shape
- Directional boards are better if you spend most of your time going forwards e.g. carving or powder riding
- Twin shape boards are better for doing tricks, when you need to take off and/or land backwards (switch)
- Directional twins are best for all-mountain performance. They are basically the same shape either end, but have a slightly longer nose to help with flotation in powder
How are women’s snowboards different?
The short answer is: they’re not. Women need exactly to consider exactly the same factors as men when selecting a board. Just because it’s a female-specific model, doesn’t mean it will suit every female rider. Get the right flex, the right shape and the right length, and everything flows from there.
What about profile?
Profile refers to the shape of a snowboard when viewed from the side. You’ve probably heard of terms like camber, rocker and flat base. These describe the direction in which it bends (or not) between the nose and the tail.
Traditional camber, where the board arches up off the ground in the middle, effectively spring-loads it. Boards with traditional camber feel lively from edge to edge and have maximum ollie power. Rockered snowboards are the opposite. They bend up from the middle towards the tip and tail, like a banana. This lifts the contact points off the ground, so you’re less likely to catch an edge if you make a mistake. The downside is that rocker encourages skiddy turns rather than smooth carves, because you can’t really engage the whole edge. Hybrid and flat bases are somewhere in between. They attempt to offer a compromise between turning performance and forgiveness.
Many brands give their women’s boards an alternative profile – either rockered, flat or hybrid. The idea is to make them more relaxed, at the expense of high performance.
At Bataleon, we believe men and women alike appreciate a lively board whose performance is not compromised. But we also understand that progression is harder when you’re worried about catching an edge. The solution is Triple Base Technology (3BT).
3BT combines classic camber from tip to tail with uplifted sides in each corner. This achieves the goal of raising the contact points – making the board way less likely to hook up – without sacrificing anything in ollie power or turning ability. In fact, our 3D approach to board design makes turns feel smoother than regular cambered snowboards, and increases pop (see our Triple Base deep dive for more explanation).
In short, they’re even more fun to ride.
Bottom Line: What’s the best women’s snowboard?
Women’s snowboards are all typically shorter, narrower and softer than their male equivalents, but it’s important to choose the right model for your riding style and ability. The ‘best’ board therefore comes down to a subjective decision.
If you’re into park and freestyle – or you’re still learning – you’ll benefit from a softer board like the Spirit or the FeelBetter that’s easy to control at slow speeds and won’t buck you off.
If you spend more time charging the hardpack, get something a little stiffer that can hold an edge at high speed. The Push Up ticks this box, and can handle any terrain.
If you’re all about surfing deep snow, treat yourself to a dedicated powder board like the ThunderStorm. You’ll thank us for it.
Whichever direction you go, Triple Base Technology will help you get to the next level faster and keep you smiling along the way.
